Margrethe Vestager, European Commissioner for Competition tweeted,
“There is a lot to fight for: Engage! Women and men alike. We need power to make equality a reality.”
From a communication viewpoint, “equality a reality,” is memorable, powerful, and repeatable – three characteristics you want of your messages.
As for celebrating today, journalists at the New York Times, captured the complexities of International Women’s Day in the first few paragraphs of their article:
ROME — In the era of #MeToo and Time’s Up, International Women’s Day arrived on Thursday with a sense of urgency this year.
For many women, there is a keen awareness that there has been a major shift in the firmament when it comes to gender parity, the treatment of women in the workplace and sexual dynamics.
But others — scratching out lives in developing countries in Africa, toiling away at jobs with little pay in Latin America, or scrambling to raise children without help in the Middle East — probably have little time left over to reflect on the one day of the year designated to celebrate “the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women,” as the website says.
Wherever you live, whatever you do, and whatever you believe in — let’s make the world a better place together by treating everyone like fellow sisters and brothers.
