The Power of a Wave, from an 8 year-old

two 8 year old girls, walking home from school, on the sidewalk, pointing with a wave

My GPS took me through a few residential streets to get to an appointment at a local coffee shop this afternoon.

As I was driving, I noticed quite a few young children walking along the sidewalks. Thought to myself, “School must be letting out.”

I approached the stop sign to make my right hand turn. Walking to the corner, were two 8 year-old girls. Naturally, I paid attention to them and what direction they were heading. They stopped near the sign. We made eye contact. I expected them to cross.

Perhaps five seconds passed, which seemed like an eternity. I was waiting patiently for them to cross.

And then the 8 year-old took control. That’s right, she took control with a wave. She waved me on. She waved me on with such authority and confidence, I simply pressed the gas and drove on my merry way.

As I drove away, I marveled about the young girl and her wave. When it comes to driving, even an 8 year-old can direct an adult with his 4,000 pound car, to go or to stop, with a simple wave.
