Happy World Storytelling Day! According to the World Storytelling Day website…

World Storytelling Day is celebrated every year on March equinox and the following week. This year it starts on Thursday, March 20. The idea is to have as many people as possible tell and listen to stories in as many languages and at as many places as possible. Doing so we promote oral storytelling all over the world. We also get a chance to build friendships across national and cultural borders in joyful ways. As if we meet around a global campfire.

And according to Wikipedia, World Storytelling Day goes back to 1991/1992…

World Storytelling Day has its roots in a national day for storytelling in Sweden, circa 1991-2. At that time, an event was organized for March 20 in Sweden called “Alla berättares dag” (All storytellers day). The Swedish national storytelling network passed out sometime after, but the day stayed alive, celebrated around the country by different enthusiasts. In 1997, storytellers in Perth, Western Australia coordinated a five-week-long Celebration of Story, commemorating March 20 as the International Day of Oral Narrators. At the same time, in Mexico and other Latin American countries, March 20 was already celebrated as the National Day of Storytellers.

FOUNDED IN 2002

And for our history, The Chief Storyteller® started in 2002, just about 17 years ago. Our earliest photograph of Ira Koretsky (CEO) speaking, was at an event for the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. Ira is both an alumni and an adjunct professor there.
