Would You Like a Pony? Clever Television Commercials from Ally Bank [Part 1]

Written by  Ira Koretsky

While developing a presentation for a client, Park, the CEO, and I were talking about how to start off his talk. Obviously, it was a story! The question was, what story? as Park has many good ones. As we discussed target audience preferences, he had an "aha moment," well sort of.

Park shared he recently saw a television commercial from Ally Bank. He really liked it for two reasons–its clever use of children to deliver the message and its simplicity.

Park's company, Budgetext, helps make education affordable by providing great prices on used learning materials (e.g., textbooks at Bookcircus.com and study materials at Studysource.com). So when he sees commercials with children, he is especially interested.

The "Would You Like a Pony" ad is available on YouTube. The bank representative asks the first girl if she wants a pony. She enthusiastically responds yes. The man gives her a plastic toy pony and she's happy. He then asks the second girl the same question. She also responds yes. In trots a real pony.

Watch the video for the first girl's response and how the "bank representative" handles the situation.
